AYIOS JAKOVOS / DHIMA

N° 11
Town / Village : Ayios Jakovos / Altinova

DESCRIPTION :

The shrine lies not far from the cemetery at Altinova (Ayios Jakovos/Melia). A round area about 10m in diameter was fenced in and given a pebble floor. A low wall divided it in half. On the west there was a terracotta basin sunk in the ground, whose ashy filing included several interesting things such as pottery incense birners shaped like a human arm, and a necklace of tiny golden pomegranates and dates strung around a Babylonian cylinder seal. In the eastern half of the shrine there may have stood two altars to male and female deities.

Excavated in 1929 by the Swedish Expedition.
