N° 50 h
Town / Village : Nicosia

District : Nicosia

DESCRIPTION :

This large Khan was built directly after the Ottoman conquest. The building was mostly used by traveling merchants and pilgrims.

The khan has a square ground plan with two floors and a large square interior courtyard . The khan’s entrance is in the east side of the building and it is a large marble gate consisting of architectural elements originally belonging to older buildings. The khan is a stone building with small windows in the upper floor. The interior courtyard is surrounded by rows of arches supported upon stone columns and roofed with  groin-vaults. Two staircases lead to the upper floor. The khan’s roof has many stone octogonal chimneys. Apart from the dorms (40 private rooms)  which are situated in the upper floor, the khan also had storerooms , shops and stables which were in the ground floor.

In the courtyard, an octogonal miniature domed mosque with a fountain was added in the 19th century.

During British colonial rule (1878) the khan was used as Nicosia’s central prison until 1893.

In the 20th century (until 1963) the building was occupied by poor families.

Period : Its construction date is possibly 1572 and it was built under Muzafer Pasha who was one of the generals who took part in Nicosia’s conquest and later became governor of Cyprus.

OUTSTANDING VALUE :

Khans, or caravanserai, had a long story, supplying the needs of travellers, in particular merchants, who would bring goods from distant lands along trade routes stretching from all parts of Anatolia, and even further, from Central Asia. Bazaars and markets would not be far away (Bedestan).
