BYZANTINE TOWN

KHELONES

N° 34
Town / Village :

District : Famagusta

DESCRIPTION :

The city is situated to the south of Dipkarpaz, on Apostolos Andreas monastery road where it joins with the sea.

The most important remain is its ancient harbour. It is enlarged and still used as a harbour for fishing boats. Excavators discovered remains of a slip for a launching ship from a road 4 miles long across the peninsula, which had evidently been made at a remote period for the purpose of avoiding dangerous sea passage round by Cap Dinaretum (Apostolos Andreas) for small vessels voyaging between Salamis and northern part of the island.

Period : Archaic and Early Byzantine period.
