DESCRIPTION :

The small arch covered church of St Solomoni is built on a low hill to the east of the village. This is a single room, rectangular building with a barrel vaulted roof and underground crypt.

The church was originally decorated throughout with frescoes. Unfortunately, its long abandonment and disrepair, had resulted in the destruction of most of the murals. In those that survived the iconography that is followed is Paleochristian, while the style is similar to the archaic style of the frescoes of Cappadocia. The frescoes of the church of St Solomoni are unique in Cyprus and can be dated to the 9th century. Unfortunately, these murals have been removed .

OUTSTANDING VALUE :

 According to the tradition of the Karpas, St Solomoni, mother of the 7 Maccabee Brothers, lived and died at this location since the large grave behind the church, is said to belong to the Saint.

The seven Maccabee brothers along with their mother St Solomoni, were led to martyrdom because they did not agree to break the command of fasting. All the children of St Solomoni were horribly tortured for their faith, and were thrown in a pan with hot oil. The idolaters also tried to torture their mother, but she threw herself into the fire.
