CHURCH OF PANAGIA KANAKARIA

PANAGIA KANAKARIA

N° 45
Town / Village : Lytrangkomi /Boltasli

District : Famagusta

DESCRIPTION :

The church and two other buildings, one of which is  ruins, are situated in the grounds of the monastery.

The church belongs to the domed basilica type. The blind dome is situated above the bema. The church’s apse is the only part of the 5th century timber-roofed basilica which survives today. This earlier basilica was destroyed in the 7th century during the Arab raids.

The church was initially rebuilt with a timber roof, and was later substituted with an arched roof. A dome was added above the holy bema at a later stage and another dome was added above the central aisle in the 12th century.

 Period : 5th century – 12th century

OUTSTANDING VALUE :

The church’s apse, which dates to the Middle Byzantine period, was adorned with 6th century mosaics considered to be some of the few surviving masterpieces of Early Christian mosaics in the entire world. Ichnographically these mosaics are considered to be unique. The Virgin Mary is depicted with a bright ‘glory’, a feature which is normally associated with Christ. Jesus and the Virgin are accompanied by two archangels, surrounded by a frieze depicting the twelve apostles in medallions.
