CHURCH OF St MARY OF THE CARMELITES

ST MARY OF THE CARMELITES

N° 21 l
Town / Village : Famagusta / Within the walls

District : Famagusta

DESCRIPTION :

The church has a single nave of four bays and a three-sided apse. The roof has ribbed vaults. In the second bay, two shallow chapels were added. The exterior walls are supported by buttresses.

The church was wall painted.

It was the church of a monastery, which contains various tombs. It seems that the tomb of Peter Thomas, who was the Pope’s representative and the Patriarch of Constantinople and who died in Famagusta in 1366 (and was then named as a saint) was inside this church.
