CNIDOS : TOWN & HARBOUR

CNIDOS

N° 17
Town / Village : Cnidos / Zeitin Burnu

District : Famagusta

DESCRIPTION :

Cnidos was a Phoenician city .  The deserted town and harbour give an idea of what Phoenician settlement was like. The settlement was later to be destroyed by the Ptolemies, around 250 BC.

Period : Late Bronze Age

OUTSTANDING VALUE :

Horace, in the 1st century BC wrote an ode :  « O Venus, Queen of Cnidos and Paphos, forsake thy beloved Cyprus and betake thyself to the fair shrine of Glycera … » . It is generally held that he is referring to the town of the same name in Asia Minor ; yet it would seem evident that there must be a close connection between them.
