DESCRIPTION :

There is a tradition that the Hazreti Ömer mescid, which stands on the side of a small bay 4km east of Girne is the burial place of Ömer, one of Muawiya’s officers, and his six companions who died in the first Arab raid of 648/9.  The name of Catalköy means ‘vilage of pitchforks’ and is said to commemorate the battle between the Arabs led by the Blessed Ömer and the local peasants.

OUTSTANDING VALUE :

The spot is still venerated since the raid was an instance of ‘Jihad’, or Holy War, as significant in the Moslem faith as the Crusades were to medieval Christianity.
