KALOPSIDA : TOWN (MIDDLE BRONZE AGE)

KALOPSIDA

N° 28
Town / Village : Kalopsida /Cayönü

District : Famagusta

DESCRIPTION :

In 1924, Gjerstad excavated a town house with a street running beside it. It lay over the remains of an earlier house. He found ten rooms grouped round a courtyard . The rooms were large, squareish with stone foundations to mud-brick walls and there were gaps where timber uprights would have stood to support the roof. In one room which had an open doorway, possibly closed by a thick curtain, there was a raised round hearth in the middle. Gjerstadt saw it either as an altar, the religious centre of the house, or ‘a chimney where a fire was made ‘. It was not a kitchen, the cooking was done in the courtyard. There was a good deal of storage space .

Period : Middle Bronze Age

OUTSTANDING VALUE :

There is a suggestion that Kalopsida was the capital of east Cyprus before Enkomi grew up.
