DESCRIPTION :

The city site lays 3.0 – 3.5 km between the rocky bays.

Legendary founder of ancient Karpasia is said to be Pygmalion, king of Cyprus. It is said to have contained a temple dedicated to Sarpedon, son of Zeus. In 32 AD, Ayios Philion was appointed first bishop of the city. The city  flourished after 4th century. Especially after the visit of St Helena in 327 AD. Christianity was spread and religious buildings began to be constructed in the city.

Karpasia was affected by Arabic raids that began in 647 AD and happene 24 times. People moved to Agridia.

Today the entire city remains are almost under the earth.

 Period : Phoenician - Classical - Middle Byzantine.

Harbour : The ancient harbour has a significant status among ruins that have reached today. Considerable traces can still be seen on the mole. The mole on the eastern side can be traced 110 meters from its starting place on the shore, is 240 cm wide and 120 cm above the sea level. There are some traces at the western mole that show that this area was used as an ancient stone quarry.

Tsambres Tombs Area :  This area is under a thick layer of earth. In the excavation 24 tombs were founded, dated to Classical (6th century BC) and Hellenistic period (3rd century BC). Some have Christian symbols engraved on the walls and ceiling.

 

Anavrysia Tombs : Tombs found in excavations (1937-1938) and dated to Early Bronze Age.

 

Latsia tombs : According to clues found during excavatins, these tombs date to Iind and IIIrd period of Early Geometric Age.

 

Period : Phoenician - Classical - Middle Byzantine.
