DESCRIPTION :

The most important monuments of Kyrenia lie in a quarry close to the modern harbour, the rock-cut chapels called Khrysokava where Christian worshippers would meet together secretly and where, it is thought, martyrs were buried. Their tombs were venerated later on, after Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire, they formed the basis dor the altars and chapels. The wall paintings of the rock-cut chapel of Aya Mavra belong to this period (9th and 10th century.)

Period : 2nd century – 10th century.

 

OUTSTANDING VALUE :

Very fragmentary andexposed to the elements, these paintings on the living rock are among the earliest to be seen in North Cyprus.
