DESCRIPTION : Urania City Site

 According to scientific studies the city had a citadel on the hill to the east), a necropolis with rock-cut tombs (to the west of the group of churches),  the site of a temple and a harbour (around 2 km to the north) that were silted up with sand.

 

 

 Period : Classical and Byzantine

 

OUTSTANDING VALUE :

Urania was known as one of the six important cities of Cyprus at the beginning of the 2nd century BC. Like a lot of sites in North Cyprus, much has still to be excavated, and virtually all that remains are the three churches.

Urania city was disturbed because of Arab raids in Byzantine period. People moved to southern mountains of Urania city where they was a more secure place and founded city of AGRIDIA.
