DESCRIPTION :

The site, located in the northern foothills of the Kyrenia rande, one and a half miles east of the Abbey of Bellapais, is a large Bronze Age cemetery. Its tombs were looted in the early 1930’s. .

VOUNOUS A , EARLY BRONZE AGE  I CEMETERY

Roughly two-thirds of the burials found in situ were placed on their left sides with the legs flexed, often with their arms folded across the body and raised towards the face. Others burials were often found in dorsal positions with the legs flexed to varying degrees.

Tomb 164 : This was the single largest chamber excavated and it contained an impressive assemblage of grave goods including an unusual deep bowl or ‘cult vessel’, a ceramic horn, considerable quantities of ox bones and four copper knives.

 

VOUNOUS B, EARLY BRONZE AGE II – MIDDLE BRONZE AGE II CEMETERY

Tomb 36 : It contained a diverse array of ceramic items including two horns, a ring vase, and several vessels with modelled bull’ heads, snakes, birds, horned animals, etc. , along with a large part of an ox skeleton and other faunal remains.
