PIGHADES : SETTLEMENT & SANCTUARY

MYRTOU / PIGHADES

N° 49 b
Town / Village : Myrtou / Camlibel

District : Kyrenia

DESCRIPTION :

Late Bronze Age settlement and sanctuary.

Only the sanctuary has been examined but scholars believed that it was a component of an important town, flourishing from the Late Bronze Age to the Iron Age.

At one stage the shrine had two courts, one larger than theother, with rooms leading off them. In the great court there was an altar and beside it lay a deposit of many rams’ horns and deer’s antlers. One part of the building is an olive press.

At a late stage a pillar of ashlar masonry blocks was set up in the great court, surmounted by Minoan ‘Horns of Consecration’ which are  known at other sites in Cyprus.

Period : Late Bronze Age

DOCUMENTS / BIBLIOGRAPHY

The treasure of this sanctuary was a group of bronze stands . Decorative stands such as these were to be used under bronze cauldrons. Cyprus is the place where they were first made, but they seem to have gradually acquired a central function in many Bronze Age liturgies and were exported far and wide throughout the Mediterranean.

Cultivation of the olive and farming in general must have played an important part in local religion.
